A new patient education video featuring the Velindre Pharmacy team has been launched today.
The animated video provides information to patients who are starting their cancer treatment with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (commonly known as TKIs and whose name usually ends in -nib).
TKIs are a type of targeted therapy used to treat various cancer sites and are given to patients in a tablet or capsule form. Currently, there are more than 25 different types of TKIs prescribed to patient as part of their treatment.
TKIs are a growing class of medicine used in the treatment of many cancers including renal, lung and melanoma, and are continuing to expand into other cancer sites.
Currently, the Patient Education Team provides patients with a bespoke consultation in the Pharmacy Department to help them understand how to take their medication, how to safely manage any side-effects and when to ring the Treatment Helpline for advice.
As the number of TKIs continues to increase, they identified a need for a more sustainable method of delivering patient education.
Sarah Goman is the Pharmacy Patient Education Team Lead and is one of the characters featured in the video. She said: “We wanted to find a way of reaching more patients to provide information about their treatment, and how to manage some of the common, less severe toxicities.
“The aim of this video is to empower patients and their carers to feel confident about managing their treatment and staying well at home.”
