“No one thought Luca would make it through that weekend. In the blink of an eye, the future we had planned was torn away,” recalls Rebecca Park, mother of four-year-old Luca, who has been battling a rare and aggressive spinal cord tumour since he was just 15 weeks old.
This Christmas, Rebecca is sharing the story of her son, Luca, to thank everyone who has ever donated blood or platelets and to raise the awareness of how important these donations are for patients across Wales. The Welsh Blood Service is highlighting Luca’s story as part of their ‘Seeing Is Believing’ campaign, where donors will begin receiving messages when their donations are issued to Welsh hospitals to help outline the real-life need of these vital donations every day.
At just 15 weeks old, Luca was diagnosed with the most aggressive form of tumour, known as a grade four, which was wrapped around his spinal cord. Due to the tumour’s location, it is inoperable and therefore incurable.
Rebecca was told that Luca might only have weeks to live.
Luca began treatment at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff but unfortunately became unwell within days of starting the treatment. Luca’s father, Paul, and older brother, Zac, were given special permission to visit the ward alongside Rebecca during the global pandemic, due to the severity of the situation. Their only wish as a family was to take Luca home to be surrounded by those who love him.
Recalling that heartbreaking period, Rebecca said: “No one thought Luca would make it through that weekend. In the blink of an eye, the future we had planned was torn away.”
To everyone’s surprise, Luca started making small improvements and eventually completed a year of chemotherapy, supported with multiple blood and platelet transfusions.
When discussing Luca’s lifesaving transfusions, Rebecca said: “I want to thank the generosity of total strangers for providing Luca with these lifesaving gifts.”
She continued: “I’m often asked, ‘What can I do to help?’. The answer is, if you want to help Luca along with anyone fighting cancer, please consider donating.
“Luca simply wouldn’t be here without blood and platelet donations. The generosity of total strangers has saved our little boy, not once, but twice.”
