The construction of a new £38 million Satellite Radiotherapy Centre at Nevill Hall Hospital marked a major milestone earlier this week.
Representatives from Velindre Cancer Centre, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and constructions partners Kier held a signing ceremony at the site in Abergavenny, which will be home to a state-of-the-art unit.
The new facility is due to open in early 2025. It will revolutionise access to radiotherapy services, ensuring that vital care is accessible closer to home.
Part of a long-term programme to transform cancer services in South Wales, the project aims to bring high quality healthcare services directly to the community, housed in outstanding buildings that are purpose-built and exude exceptional quality.
The plan involves expanding the boundaries of Nevill Hall Hospital, demolishing the existing single-story maternity building and replacing it with a larger, two-storey structure that will provide more space for enhanced accessibility and embrace new landscaping, transforming the surroundings.
Significant progress has been made in the construction of the building in recent months, including the main steel frame that provides insight to the size and scale of the new unit.
The structure of the linear accelerators (LINAC) bunkers, made of high-density concrete blocks to help shield radiation, has also taken shape. These bunkers will hold the medical linear accelerators, which use a high energy radiation beam to treat cancer.
Five representatives of Velindre was part of the group of senior stakeholders visiting the site, which will benefit patients for many years to come when it's complete.
