On Tuesday 6 May, we were delighted to launch Velindre's first art exhibition by patient Viv Leach, titled 'It’s a Wonderful Still Life'.
In 2023, Viv Leach was unexpectedly diagnosed with lung cancer. During the early days of her treatment, she found solace in the beauty of flowers - gifts from friends and family that brightened her days. They were symbols of love and support, and it was through painting these flowers that Viv rediscovered her passion for creativity.
"Painting has really helped me slow down and be in the moment. My hope is that they bring colour, joy and positivity as you walk by" - Viv Leach, Velindre Patient and Artist
Viv's art has been exhibited on behalf of Velindre's Arts in Health programme, led by Sally Thelwell and funded by Velindre Cancer Charity. The paintings are available to purchase, with all profits going toward the charity.
The Arts in Health programme aims is to improve the experience of patients, donors and staff through regular, visible, high quality art provision for all. By supplementing medicine and care, the arts can improve the health of people who experience mental or physical health problems and improve their well-being. Engaging in the arts can support prevention of disease and promote well-being, and can also improve healthcare environments and benefit staff retention, morale, well-being and professional development.
The Arts in Health programme provides many different initiatives across Velindre, including performances by the Welsh National Opera and Welsh National Orchestra, the Art Cart (which encourages inpatients to engage in crafts on the wards), and Anadlu - a monthly wellbeing event held at St Fagans Museum.
