A consultant in medical oncology at the Velindre Cancer Service, has been elected as the next clinical vice president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).
Dr Hilary Williams FRCP MbCHB PhD, who specialises in colorectal cancers and has played a pivotal part in developing acute oncology in Wales, received 56% of the vote during a month-long ballot which saw the highest turnout in the college’s elections for over 20 years.
She will begin in the role on 1 August for three years and continue her clinical practice at Velindre.
Talking with the RCP, Dr Hilary Williams said: ‘I am delighted to be taking up the role of RCP clinical vice president. I will work with fellows and members to support physicians to provide the best possible patient care.
“I want to say a big thanks to everyone who has supported the RCP over the past year and who voted in this election, and particularly the RCP family in Wales, and my colleagues and medical director team at Velindre. Diolch o galon. Rwy’n edrych ymlaen at weithio gyda chi gyd.”
Dr Williams trained in Sheffield before completing a PhD in Edinburgh in immunology and oncogenic viruses. She has led and championed acute oncology at Velindre Cancer Service and Wales and particularly notes the important part Velindre played in supporting her development as a clinical leader.
She became RCP Regional Adviser for south-east Wales in 2018 before her election to the RCP Council in 2022 and as Vice President for Wales in 2023.
