Last week, Velindre Cancer Centre Pharmacy team had the pleasure of welcoming colleagues from Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Pharmacy for a day of innovation, insight, and professional exchange.
The visit was sparked by the growing interest in VCS’s Advanced Pharmacy Technician roles - an interest fuelled in part by national conference presentations from Velindre’s own Emma Williams (VAP) and Sarah Goman (Patient Medicines Education), who showcased the pioneering work being led by our technician team.
Visiting us from Clatterbridge were Sarah Craig, Advanced Pharmacist and Teacher Practitioner at Liverpool John Moores University, Carys Hooker, Lead Pharmacy Technician, and Bridget Siju, Student Pharmacist. Their goal: to learn more about how Velindre is breaking new ground in expanding the pharmacy technician role, particularly in areas like SACT Pharmacy Verification and technician-led clinical assessments.
Following a tour of the Pharmacy Department, the wider cancer centre, and a glimpse into the future at the new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC), our Senior Pharmacy Technicians gave an in-depth look at our advanced services in action. The Clatterbridge team had the opportunity to observe and engage with how our technicians deliver in the VAP service, lead on patient medicines education, and clinically verify SACT prescriptions—showcasing the evolving and impactful role of technicians at VCS
We’re incredibly proud of our Pharmacy Technician team for continuing to push boundaries and set new standards in practice. The visit not only highlighted VCS’s leadership in this space but also opened the door for ongoing collaboration with our colleagues at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
We look forward to sharing ideas, experiences, and innovations as we work together to shape the future of Cancer Pharmacy.
