South Wales Neuro-Oncology team wins Oncology Team of the Year!

We’re proud to announce that the South Wales Neuro-Oncology team has been awarded 'Oncology Team of the Year' at the Welsh Healthcare Awards 2025.

The award ceremony, which took place on Thursday 16 October at the Vale Resort in Hensol, welcomed healthcare teams from organisations across Wales. Winners were chosen in 9 categories, ranging from Mental Health to Gastroenterology.

The South Wales Neuro-Oncology Centre is a collaborative resource comprising of Velindre Cancer Service, University Hospital of Wales, and the South West Wales Cancer Centre (based at Swansea’s Singleton Hospital). It has a multidisciplinary team drawn from across the network area which discusses and manages all brain tumour cases in South Wales.

The team was one of 5 nominees for the category, alongside Velindre Cancer Service's Thoracic Oncology Trials Team, led by Dr Paul Shaw. 

This award comes after the team's prestigious accreditation from the Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence earlier this year - an endorsement given to centres across the UK who have met or exceeded standards across the treatment, care and research they provide to patients with a brain tumour. The Centre commended the team's exemplary patient-centred care model, innovative oncology service, outstanding training opportunities, and cutting-edge neuro-oncology research programme.

Dr James Powell, Neuro-oncology lead of Velindre University NHS Trust, said:

"This was a great event and it was lovely to hear of the many examples of the great work being done right across the NHS in Wales. It was humbling for the South Wales Neuro-Oncology team to be nominated alongside many other excellent Oncology teams from across Wales, each of whom would have been very worthy winners. We are all proud to be part of the hard working South Wales Neuro-Oncology team, and the team were delighted and honoured to have received this recognition."
