Hannah Russon receives Chief Nursing Officer Excellence Award

17 November 2025

Hannah Russon, Head of Velindre Oncology Academy, received the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Excellence Award at the CNO Cymru Conference last week.

The conference, which took place at Sophia Gardens, saw Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, Sue Tranka, unveil her new 5 year strategic vision setting out how nursing and midwifery professions will lead healthcare transformation.

The CNO Excellence Award is given to nurses and midwives at all levels who go above and beyond their everyday roles to provide excellent care, leadership and inspiration. The recipients embody the values of public service, compassion and innovation shared by many in the nursing and midwifery professions.

Hannah is a cornerstone of Velindre Cancer Service. Since joining Velindre University NHS Trust as a Clinical Nurse Educator in 2013, she has shared her extensive expertise in oncology and haematology with staff, patients, and donors. In 2021, she spearheaded the creation of the Velindre School of Oncology and has led the Velindre Oncology Academy since its launch in 2024.

This award follows Hannah's admittance to the Bevan Fellows programme earlier this year - a two-year journey to lead, research, and implement innovative projects to improve health and well-being outcomes for the people of Wales.

Reflecting on the award, Hannah said:

“Wow, what a career highlight yesterday. I was honoured to receive the CNO Excellence Award at the CNO Cymru Conference for my contributions to oncology education across Wales. However, this award is for the wonderful team at the Velindre Oncology Academy, who make it all possible.”
