Spiritual care

The chaplaincy team meet religious and spiritual needs of patients, families and staff. We are available for those of all faiths or none.

Our team include full-time chaplains, part-time chaplains, and trained 'lay' visitor volunteers. We cover all hospitals within Cardiff and Vale (external web link), and Velindre NHS Trust.

The spiritual needs of our patients are important to us. Whilst predominantly Christian, we aim to provide care for patients from all world faiths. If you require a different faith leader, then please ask. We have contacts with other faith leaders and can contact them for you when necessary.

We work mostly in our in-patient wards. Our aim is to meet new patients shortly after their arrival to introduce ourselves. We try to identify and support patient needs as may be required. Our volunteers visit the wards and the out-patient areas of the hospital where they befriend and support patients and their families.

Patients can hold deep religious beliefs and may require access to 'rituals' suitable to their faith. They may be seeking to make sense of what is happening and why. Often people reflect on their life and this can sometimes bring about mixed feelings. Others may wish to explore the meaning of life and death or to voice concerns about the future. Our role is to walk alongside people and offer a non threatening, non judgemental and safe environment. This way, patients can explore their inner feelings and fears.

A chaplain is available Tuesdays and Thursdays all day and appointments can be made by signing up on the Chaplains door, asking a nurse to arrange it or contacting 02921 843230.If we are unable to take your call please leave a message on our answerphone or email spiritual.careteam@wales.nhs.uk
