I’m pleased to report that the highways works on the entrance of Whitchurch Hospital grounds are progressing well and are on track to be completed before Christmas as planned. The traffic management system will come to an end on 20 December.
We appreciate that the works have presented challenges to the local community and caused disruption to our neighbours for which we apologise. We are very grateful for your continued patience and cooperation.
As we get closer to completion, we will need to temporarily close Park Road in Whitchurch at certain times from 18-20 December. This is because we will need to install the new road surface which requires a full closure to ensure everyone’s safety. The work itself will involve:
• Removing the existing surface layer of the road
• Installing a new surface layer
• Installing new road markings
• Final surfacing of the footways
Cardiff Council has provided us with a Section 61 notice to enable final surfacing works to happen outside of standard construction hours. We have chosen these times to cause as little disruption as possible for you, our staff and our patients. They are:
Sunday December 18 from 9am to 7pm
Monday December 19 from 7pm to 1am
Tuesday December 20 from 7pm to 1am
Where is the closure area?
In general the closure will be from Lon Y Celyn to around 50m past the entrance from Park Road into the Whitchurch hospital grounds, so only this area will be directly affected. We hope the map below will be helpful.
How will the closure impact me?
During the designated times, you will not be able to travel in your car back and forther between Coryton to Whitchurch village along Park Road. Diversions will be in place to guide you and the map attached will be helpful. Pedestrian access will be maintained on the footways at all times.
I live within the closure area – how will that impact me?
If you live within the closure area, traffic marshals will be in place to allow residents and their vehicles to access their homes.
Similarly, access to Park Avenue, Clos Coed Hir and for residents along Park Road and the adjoining street will be always maintained, although you may be asked to wait briefly to ensure safe access along the highway.
It is possible that some Park Road and park Avenue residents will be asked to access and exit the closed area from either the Coryton or Whitchurch end as the works progress. The direction will change during the day as the works progress along the road.
During the works, the residents of Clos Coed Hir will enter and exit from the Coryton end i.e. to the left as you leave Clos Coed Hir, as the works don’t start until after the highway junction. You will not be able to access Clos Coed Hir from Whitchurch Village along Park Road.
We appreciate the inconvenience this may cause as residents may need to drive to the other side of the diversion to get home but this is the only way to maintain access throughout the works and we appreciate your patience and cooperation to maintain access at all times.
Will I have to move my car before the closures?
If you live within the closure, there is no requirement for you to move your car. However, you may wish to park outside of the closure for ease of movement.
Thank you.
We recognise the disruption this has caused to people’s daily routine and understand the frustrations you feel. We appreciate that these works present further disruption and we are working hard to alleviate them where we can as soon as possible. Please let us know if you have any further questions please by contacting Contact.Velindre @wales.nhs.uk or you can come along to our latest resident drop-in event at coffee shop Gathering Ground in Whitchurch on December 6 from 6pm to 8pm.
We would like to thank everyone for their continued patience as we work to develop the new Velindre Cancer Centre.
Best wishes,
David Powell, new Velindre Cancer Centre Project Director
