The Welsh Government will provide £1.5m to help develop a new centre to provide care and support for cancer patients and their families in South East Wales, it was announced today (Thursday March 17).
A new Maggie’s Centre will be built alongside the site of the proposed new Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff and will provide free, practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer, their family and friends.
Maggie’s Centres are independent but work in partnership with the NHS and are based in hospital grounds so they are easily accessible to the largest possible number of people affected by cancer.
It is estimated the new Maggie’s Centre will cost £4.5m – the balance of funding will be raised through donations; Maggie’s has already been successful in generating £1.5m to date.
