Velindre University NHS Trust has been recognised as one of the highest-performing organisations in NHS Wales, following the publication of the 2025 NHS Staff Survey results.
The results provide crucial insights into workforce engagement and morale, showing a strong and supportive culture to place the organisation among the top performers in NHS Wales.
More than 800 colleagues shared their views this year – a response rate of 41.3%, notably higher than the NHS Wales average of 30%. This high level of engagement reflects a workforce that is committed to shaping the future of services across the Trust.
Sarah Jenkins, Director of People and Organisational Development (Interim), said: “These results are something everyone at Velindre can feel proud of. They show that we have a compassionate, inclusive culture and a workforce that is deeply committed to delivering the very best for our patients and donors.
“To be performing above the NHS Wales average in every theme, and leading in five, is a significant achievement. I'm really proud our results reflect the dedication, skill, and teamwork of our colleagues across the Trust.”
The results highlight the Trust as a consistently high‑performing organisation. The Trust scored above the NHS Wales benchmark in all 10 themes measured by the survey and was the top‑scoring organisation in five key areas.
This positive culture supports the delivery of specialist services across Velindre Cancer Service and the Welsh Blood Service, as well as the wider work of the Trust.
Alongside these strengths, the survey highlights areas where the Trust is determined to go further. Staff shared the importance of continuing to improve how the organisation learns, supports flexible working, and maintains morale in a challenging healthcare environment.
The Trust is already acting on this feedback through its 'You said, we’re doing it together” approach – a programme designed to ensure staff voices directly shape change.
Sarah Jenkins said the results also provide a clear focus for continued improvement: “What makes this survey so valuable is that it gives our colleagues a real voice. We are listening carefully to what they’ve told us, about what we’re doing well, and where we need to go further.
“Through our ‘You said, we’re doing it together’ approach, we’re already working in partnership with teams to make meaningful improvements, from strengthening staff recognition to developing local action plans across services.
“We know there is more to do, particularly around flexible working, learning and maintaining morale, and we are fully committed to making progress in these areas.”
The Trust’s Staff Engagement Index remains well above the NHS Wales average, reflecting high levels of motivation, involvement, and advocacy among colleagues.
While engagement scores have seen a slight dip in line with wider NHS trends, they remain consistently strong – reinforcing the Trust's reputation as a place where people feel proud to work and able to make a difference.
In the year ahead, the Trust will focus on further enhancing the working experience for colleagues, with priorities including:
This ongoing commitment helps ensure that staff feel supported to deliver the best possible care for patients and donors, now and in the future.
These results demonstrate that the Trust is not only delivering high‑quality services, but also nurturing a positive and inclusive workplace where people can thrive.
Whether supporting patients through cancer treatment, helping donors give the gift of life, or working behind the scenes, every role plays a vital part in making a difference.
“Our people are at the heart of everything we do. These results show that we are not only delivering excellent services, but also creating a workplace where people feel supported, valued and able to thrive. If you are looking for a career where you can truly make a difference and be part of a supportive, high-performing team, we would love you to join us," added Sarah Jenkins.
