The Chronic Pain Management Programme Team

The Cardiff Chronic Pain Management Programme is run by an expert Interdisciplinary Team with members spanning Physiotherapy, Psychology and Medicine with many years’ experience in persistent pain management.

In 1994 we were the first service to deliver outpatient pain management programmes in South Wales.  At that time, patients were referred from Aberystwyth to Chepstow.  We now provide a service for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Cwm Taf University Health Board residents, as other health boards in Wales now host their own service.

The team aims to help you live well with your persistent pain condition, by improving your ability to self-manage via internationally recognised approaches delivered within a pain management programme.

Profiles:

Dr Bethan Jones

Bethan is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine and an Honorary Consultant in Pain Medicine, working as Clinical Lead for the Cardiff Pain Management Programme and as one of the Medical Consultants in the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Pain Service.  She is also a Palliative Medicine Consultant in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

She has worked as part of the pain management service since 2007 and is keen to promote an approach to living well with chronic conditions focused on “What matters to you” not “What is the matter with you”

Andrew Colwill

Andrew is an Advanced Practitioner Physiotherapist and has been working in the field of persistent pain for the past 10 years.   He is also a lecturer at Cardiff University for the MSc in Pain Management.   Since joining the team, he has been working to develop the content, design and access to our online and face-to-face persistent pain management programmes.

His particular area of interest is helping people understand the science of persistent pain and the opportunities it presents to help improve quality of life, including movement, despite living with a long-term pain condition.

Dr Jo Hampson

Jo is the Consultant Clinical Psychologist within the team and has worked in the service since 1998, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise in helping people manage their persistent pain.

Jo provides Psychology input to the chronic pain management programme and has a particular interest in assisting people to develop effective coping strategies when living with a long-term pain condition, using evidence based management techniques.

Helen Pinnell

Helen is the team’s medical secretary and administrates the clinics for the team, our pain management programmes and the resources for helping people understand their pain.
