Before any individual attends a Pain Management Programme, a range of factors require consideration to ensure it is the right time for them to participate.
The nature of chronic pain makes it a complex condition. Whilst it is desirable for individuals who wish to come on a Pain Management Programme to have some clearly defined goals and aims in terms of what they would like to change in their life or achieve, this is not always possible at the point of referral.
Individuals who have predominating mental health difficulties may be unsuited to the programme. In such cases it may be helpful to receive support for such difficulties first, however there may be circumstances where the programme is entirely appropriate. Some people who attend our team assessment clinic may also have concerns around engaging in group work and this is something we are happy to discuss and problem solve with individuals, to try to best meet their needs.
We do not expect referrers to make their own judgements on these issues. Therefore, if you or the potential patient are uncertain, it is usually best to make a referral to the programme and our experienced multidisciplinary team will assist in the decision-making process.
Please note, we are now offering online and face-to-face pain management programmes.
