MediWales Innovation Awards 2025

Velindre Radiotherapy Team wins MediWales Innovation Award for Digital Impact

The Radiotherapy Physics Team at Velindre University NHS Trust have proudly received the Technology and Digital Impact Award, supported by Fujifilm and the Welsh Government. Nominated by the Velindre Innovation Team, the award recognises their pioneering work on EdgeVcc, an automated treatment planning solution developed with Cardiff University. This innovation uses advanced algorithms to create precise, personalised cancer treatment plans in a fraction of the usual time, improving consistency, efficiency, and freeing healthcare scientists to focus on complex cases. More recently EdgeVcc has been utilised to objectively audit plan quality across UK centres and national clinical trials.

Congratulations to Philip Wheeler, Salvatore Berenato, Tony Millin and the wider multi-disciplinary team, who worked on the Automated Planning Project. Their outstanding achievements demonstrate the power of innovation to transform cancer care in Wales.

"We are incredibly proud to see the Radiotherapy Physics Team recognised for their commitment to innovation. EdgeVcc is a perfect example of how technology can enhance clinical practice, reduce variation, and set new standards for efficiency and quality in cancer care"
