Healthy Eating Principles

Use the Eatwell Guide for guidance on eating a balanced diet:

Eat plenty of:

  • Fruit, vegetables and salad – choose as many varieties and colours as possible. Eat some raw and some cooked. Fresh, tined or frozen options are all acceptable.
  • Complex Carbohydrates – Bread, Rice, Potatoes, Pasta, Cereals. Choose wholegrain where possible.
  • Non-animal protein - Pulses – beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, and quorn.

Eat some of:

  • Animal protein – White meat, fish, eggs.
  • Milk and dairy foods.
  • If you avoid these, choose suitable dairy free options

Eat just a small amount of:

  • Foods high in saturated fats, salt and sugar
  • Red and processed meats
