In research, there is a distinction between involvement, engagement, and participation. Involvement is an active partnership between patients and the public and researchers in the research process. Engagement is where information and knowledge about research is provided and disseminated (e.g. public events). Participation refers to the recruitment of patients or public as participants in research.
