For many people, especially women, losing their hair can be as traumatic as the initial cancer diagnosis. It affects an individual’s self-confidence and well being. The HeadStrong service offers practical support and advice about hair loss from specially trained volunteers. Many have personal experience of cancer and hair loss and understand what you may be going through. You will learn how to look after your hair and scalp before, during and after treatment, You will also learn scarf-tying techniques and can try on a range of hats, scarves, fringes and hairpieces. This should help to increase your self confidence and esteem.
This service is completely free. Hour-long appointments are available every Wednesday in the Rowan Ward at Velindre Cancer Centre. Those experiencing hair loss as a result of treatment for any cancer are welcome to attend. To make an appointment, please telephone the Patient Information Centre on 02920 196132.
