Statement regarding vandalism at the former Whitchurch Hospital site

29 July 2026

We are aware of serious incidents of vandalism at the former Whitchurch Hospital site, including racist and offensive graffiti.

The graffiti is wholly unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our organisation or our communities.

Arrangements were made to have the graffiti removed as quickly as possible once the Trust was made aware.

The incidents have also been reported to South Wales Police, and we are working with relevant partners to ensure it is dealt with appropriately.

The vandalism comes after the Trust recently installed fencing on our land at the request of key stakeholders on the former Whitchurch Hospital site following previous incidents of vandalism. We appreciate that this impacted access to informal footpaths, but as a responsible landowner we have a duty to protect the site, safeguard members of the public, and help prevent further instances of trespass, anti-social behaviour and damage to historically significant buildings.

Velindre University NHS Trust became the legal owner of the Whitchurch Hospital buildings and surrounding land in November 2024, following a transfer from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. The site holds historical and emotional importance to many in our community, including the Trust, which has been a neighbour since the Velindre Cancer Centre opened in 1956.

A process is currently underway to sell the site and the Trust remains committed to protecting the site going forward.
