One Year On - Construction progress at our new Velindre Cancer CentreĀ

This week marks one year since construction work began on the main site of our new Velindre Cancer Centre.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen major progress - from groundworks and foundations to the beginnings of the building’s structure taking shape. Each milestone brings us one step closer to delivering a world-class cancer centre people across south Wales for generations to come.

Our world-class cancer centre is scheduled to open in Spring 2027 - just two years away.

Our current cancer centre has served patients and staff incredibly well for almost 70 years - but as demand has grown and the way we deliver care has evolved, so too has the need for a space that can keep up. Our new home will allow us to deliver the care Velindre is known for in a site almost twice the size of our current cancer centre.

Our project team, staff from across the Trust and our colleagues at Sacyr continue to work closely together to bring our new home to life.

nVCC project director David Powell said: “This is a proud moment for everyone involved. One year in, and we’re seeing real progress above ground – a visible sign of the hard work, planning and collaboration that’s gone into making our new cancer centre a reality.

“I'd like to thank our project team, staff from across the Trust and our colleagues at Sacyr as we continue to work closely together to bring our new home to life.

"Our new cancer centre is not just about the building; it’s about delivering improved care, improved outcomes and a better experience for both our patients and our dedicated staff."

Executive Director of Strategic Transformation, Planning and Digital / Deputy Chief Executive, Carl James, said: “As we mark one year since construction began, it's inspiring to see our vision for our new Velindre Cancer Centre becoming a reality.

"This world-class facility is a key part of the regions long-term strategy to transform cancer services across south Wales to deliver the best clinical outcomes possible.

"I wanted to thank everyone for the hard work and dedication so far and look forward with excitement to seeing the nVCC take shape over the coming months."

Construction of our new cancer centre is progressing well, and it's one of the biggest projects Wales has seen in decades. It will be one of the most sustainable hospitals in the UK, providing leading cancer care for our patients and a better environment for our dedicated staff.

Our new cancer centre is critical in safeguarding the provision of crucial treatment and care for the 1.5 million people of south Wales and is critical to keep pace with the increasing demand.

We'll continue to share key updates and behind-the-scenes insights throughout construction. Engaging with our community is a key priority for the team, and you can come along and ask us questions at our monthly resident drop-in sessions. These take place on the last Wednesday of every month between 6pm and 7pm at the Noddfa building on the current cancer centre site.
