Welsh Ambulance Service Patient Transport –
What you can expect
Transport times
- We do not know exactly when patient transport will arrive at your home. Patient transport is in high demand so you will need to be prepared to wait a while for us to collect you and take you home.
- Patient transport can collect you from your home up to two hours before your appointment -
-
- For morning appointments:
be ready from 8am
-
- For afternoon appointments:
be ready from 12pm
- Don't worry if you arrive at Velindre earlier or later than the time on your appointment card – we know that patients traveling on patient transport can arrive earlier or later, and we aim to treat you before as soon as we can.
- For any 'on the day' inquiries regarding your transport, call the Welsh Ambulance Service on 0300 1000 012, or the Velindre Ambulance Liaison Office on 029 2031 6974. Staff in Velindre cannot track ambulances.
Patient responsibilities
Help us use patient transport wisely. To help us, please do the following:
- Be ready when transport arrives.
- If you have arranged transport and you cancel your hospital appointment, make sure you cancel your transport too.
- Let us know before 3:30pm the day before your appointment if you no longer need transport or if you have made other transport arrangements.
- Help us to reduce escorts* if they are not needed – We understand that some patients need medical escorts in order for them to come to hospital.
- Remember that Felindre pays for every patient and escort who comes to Felindre Hospital. If you can travel safely without a friend or relative , one vehicle can collect more patients.
- Try to use their own transport where possible .
*A chaperone is someone who travels to hospital with you. It could be a medical escort such as a nurse or carer, it could be a friend or relative.
What is a waste trip in terms of patient transport?
A journey by patient transport is considered waste in the case of the following:
- When an ambulance or volunteer car is canceled after 3:30pm the day before your appointment.
- When an ambulance or volunteer car is canceled on the day of your appointment or hospital visit.
- When an ambulance or volunteer car arrives outside an address and there is no response .
- When a patient turns an ambulance or a volunteer's car from their home because they are not ready to travel .
- When a patient goes home with a friend or relative and uses their own transport , when ambulance transport has already been arranged.
At times, you cannot avoid missing your transport. However, waste trips cost Velindre money and are inconvenient for others.
