Specific needs and dementia

Dementia and cancer care.

Dementia can affect anyone. Patients with cancer and dementia can often suffer confusion and anxiety from changes to their routine during treatment. Our support nurse for dementia can help in a variety of ways that include:

  • Providing emotional support for patients with dementia and their families during cancer treatment.
  • Giving practical information and signposting of relevant services.
  • Advising on techniques for communication and environment enhancement for patients with dementia.
  • Providing support to cope with changes / settling in to wards for treatment.
  • Working with patients, families, carers and staff in building care plans that focus on caring for the person as an individual.
  • Supporting staff through education to enhance the care of a person with dementia.  Enable staff to support Velindre’s aim of delivering compassionate dignified care focusing on the uniqueness of each person.
