Rescheduled Park Road closure

Firstly, on behalf of the new Velindre Cancer Centre project team, I would like to thank you for your cooperation as we continue with the development. We appreciate that the highways works on Whitchurch Hospital grounds have presented challenges to you and the wider local community and I’m grateful for your cooperation.

We had initially planned to carry out road resurfacing works on Park Road in December. Unfortunately, due to the severe weather, we were forced to postpone the works.

We have now rescheduled the dates for this work after discussions with Cardiff Council.

To complete the highways works, we will now need to temporarily close Park Road in Whitchurch at certain times from January 15-17. This is because we will need to install the new road surface which requires a full closure to ensure everyone’s safety.

The work itself will involve:

  • Removing the existing surface layer of the road.
  • Installing a new surface layer.
  • Installing new road markings.
  • Installing final surfacing of the footways.

When will the work take place?

Cardiff Council has provided us with a Section 61 notice to enable final surfacing works to happen outside of standard construction hours. We have chosen these times to ensure that the works cause as little disruption as possible for our patients, for our staff and the local community.

They are:

Sunday January 15 from 9am to 7pm

Monday January 16 from 7pm to 1am

Tuesday January 17 from 7pm to 1am

We’ve pulled together a short Frequently Asked Questions to help you understand what we’re arranging.

Where is the closure area?

The closure will be from Lôn y Celyn to around 50m past the entrance from Park Road into the Whitchurch hospital grounds, so only use of this area will be directly affected. The map below will help you visualise the closure area.

I live within the closure area – how will that impact me?

If you live within the closure area, traffic marshals will be in place to allow residents and their vehicles to access their homes.

Similarly, access to Park Avenue, Clos Coed Hir and for residents along Park Road will be maintained, although you may be asked to wait briefly before ensuring safe access along the highway.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on the footways in the area.

If you live on Park Road...

It is possible that some Park Road residents will be asked to access (enter and exit) the closed area from alternative directions, i.e. either the Coryton or Whitchurch end, as the works progress.

If you live on Clos Coed Hir...

During the works, the residents of Clos Coed Hir will enter and exit from the Coryton end i.e. to the left as you leave Clos Coed Hir, as the works don’t start until after the highways junction. You will not be able to access Clos Coed Hir from Whitchurch Village along Park Road.

We appreciate the inconvenience this may cause as residents may need to drive to the other side of the diversion to get home but this is the only way to maintain access throughout the works and we appreciate your patience and cooperation to maintain access at all times.

Will I have to move my car before the closures?

If you live within the closure, there is no requirement for you to move your car. However, you may wish to park outside of the closure for ease of movement.

How will the closure impact access to Velindre Cancer Centre?

During the designated times, access to Velindre Cancer Centre will only be maintained to the south i.e through Whitchurch village. You will not be able to travel in your car to the cancer centre from the Coryton roundabout along Park Road as normal vehicle use along this road will not be possible during the works. Diversions will be in place to guide you and the map attached will be helpful.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on the footways in the area.

Thank you.

We recognise the impact that traffic delays have on people’s daily lives and understand the frustrations felt. We further appreciate that these works present further disruption, and we are working hard to alleviate them as quickly as possible where we can.

Please let us know if you have any further questions by contacting Contact.Velindre @wales.nhs.uk.

Thank you for your continued cooperation as we work to develop the new Velindre Cancer Centre.

Best wishes,

David Powell, Transforming Cancer Services Project Director
