Velindre NHS Trust to develop Outline Business Case for a Radiotherapy Satellite Centre

Velindre NHS Trust has agreed to develop an Outline Business Case for a Radiotherapy Satellite Centre with a preferred option at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

The proposal to build a new Satellite Centre is part of the Trust’s ambitions to provide world class cancer services across South East Wales.

It’s anticipated that the Centre will provide 20% of Velindre’s future radiotherapy activity and will also reduce travel time for many patients.

Steve Ham, Chief Executive of Velindre NHS Trust said: “All of our patients across South East Wales who need radiotherapy treatment currently have to travel to our Cancer Centre in Whitchurch, Cardiff. We want to provide a more local service for patients across the region.

“We’ve listened to our patients, families and carers who have told us they want greater choice over when and where they receive our services. If our development is approved, many more patients will be able to receive the same high quality radiotherapy treatment closer to home and have reduced travel times.”

The Radiotherapy Satellite Centre is part of the Trust’s Transforming Cancer Services Programme which, if approved by Health Boards and Welsh Government, would also see the development of outreach facilities which will support the delivery of chemotherapy, outpatient and rehabilitation services across the region. It will also include a new Cancer Centre in Whitchurch, replacing the current Centre which is 60 years old.

Velindre NHS Trust will now work with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board who run Nevill Hall Hospital, patients and other stakeholders to develop an outline business case for the Radiotherapy Centre. The outline business case will then require consideration and approval of Health Boards and Welsh Government before it proceeds.
