The Welsh Government has approved the Outline Business Case (OBC) for a new Velindre Cancer Centre. The OBC proposes to build a new cancer Centre north of the existing site on land currently owned by NHS Wales.
Growth in demand for cancer services in Wales is expected to grow at approximately 2% per annum and the need for a new Velindre Cancer Centre is unequivocal.
Although it has served us well for more than 65 years, the current Cancer Centre is simply no longer fit for purpose. This, coupled with an expected increase in the number of people across South East Wales that will require cancer treatment and care over the next decades presents a compelling case for change we cannot ignore.
We are committed to working with everyone to deliver a building that benefits the needs of our patient population, the local community and future generations. We want the new Velindre Cancer Centre to become a flagship for sustainable development by placing the Well-Being of Future Generations Act at the centre of the design, procurement, construction and operation of the new Velindre Cancer Centre where others come to see the art of the possible in developing sustainable infrastructure.
The new build will be one is one of a number of projects that VUNHST will deliver in partnership with regional University Health Board to improve outcomes for cancer patients across south east Wales.
